Urushi is made from the sap of the urushi tree. Raw urushi has to be handled with extreme care and cured  properly. Urushi is cured in a cabinet that maintains a specific and consistent heat and humidity. Each layer must be cured in this cabinet for at least 24 hours to fully harden. Usually 15 layers are applied and cured in this way. In painting the term urushi refers to the use of coloured lacquers by mixing with clear basic lacquer. The colours are usual red, black, yellow, brown and green. Urushi in this context refers to painted mono-colour three-dimensional objects such as fountain pens. Urushi pens are expensive.
