In 1968 the new US Federal Safety standards spelt the end for the Austin Healey for which America had been a huge market. This encouraged Donald Healey to design a successor and at the same time West Coast distributor Kjell Qvale was keen to plug a big gap in sales. As most of the Austin Healey bodies had been produced by Jensen for BMC and Leyland it made sense for the three parties to collaborate. Donald Healey and Kjell Qvale produced a prototype and Jensen were given the job of putting it into production. After delays in finding a suitable engine, production eventually began in 1972 using the new 2-litre Lotus 907 engine. With 4 valves per cylinder this alloy engine provided a wide usable power band with 140 bhp at 6500 rpm and acceleration of 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds, allowing a top speed of 120 mph. HEA 4K was the second car off the production line, following the Geneva Show car and is the earliest surviving right hand drive model. After passing through 14 owners since its use as the first factory press demonstrator, it has been subjected to a full nut and bolt restoration and with the exception of the addition of an overdrive has been rebuilt as close as possible to the original specification.
