22 million years ago, when the majority of early feliform animals were still predominantly arboreal,
hyenas first appeared in the forests of Miocene Eurasia.
The first known hyena species, Plioviverrops, was a lean,
civet-like mammal that lived in Eurasia 20–22 million years ago.
It is recognized as a hyaenid by the shape of the middle ear and teeth.
The first ancestral hyenas were probably similar to the current African civet.
Plioviverrops' ancestors flourished and produced offspring with longer legs and more angular jaws,
a path that canids in North America followed.
Then, hyenas split into two different species:
lean, canine-like hyenas and powerful, bone-crushing hyenas.
