GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a stunningly beautiful Chinese Jade Ruyi Scepter, beautifully decorated with semi-precious cabochon. Ruyi (Chinese for "as one/you wish") is a curved decorative object that is a ceremonial scepter in Chinese Buddhism or a talisman symbolizing power and good fortune in Chinese folklore. A traditional ruyi has a long S-shaped handle and a head fashioned like a fist, cloud, or lingzhi mushroom. A Ruyi / lotus scepter is also the emblem of He Xiangu, one of the Eight Daoist immortals. The Yang (female principle) character of the Ruyi is often indicated by its similarity to the Lingzhi fungus and to Clouds. During the Qing dynasty it was customary for the Emperor to present deserving generals, nobles and ministers of state with gifts of jade Ruyi scepters as a mark of favor. Ruyi are constructed from diverse materials, such as gold, silver, iron, bamboo, wood, coral, lacquer, crystal, jade, and precious gems. This quite gorgeous and evocative example is made from sumptuous dark green jade, and is fabulously decorated with semi-precious gemstones. It also shows the classic Chinese symbol for longevity. The scepter measures 13.75 inches in width by 3.75 inches depth by 2.75 inches height (34.9 cm by 9.52 cm by 6.98 cm). It is in very good condition and shows wear consistent with use, dating to the mid-20th century. A rare and fine collector’s piece, it would make a superb addition to any Ruyi collection or Buddhism art and artifacts, or Chinese art collection in general.
