Sc. 5663 Edmonia Lewis on a 5"x7" Dragon Card featuring a photos of Lewis about 1870, her 1868 sculpture Hiawatha and 1867’s Forever Free. "Hiawatha" was inspired by Longfellow’s poem "Song of Hiawatha;" both she and Lewis were of Ojibwe descent. "Forever Free" depicts an African American couple as they first hear news of the Emancipation Proclamation. The photo is by Henry Rocher. Great addition for a Black History-, Native Americans- or art-on-stamps collection!
