From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to William Speed Hill. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: I have titled this paper “A bed / for woodstock” because interpretation of this kind of playbook marginalia is indicative of some of the problems facing textual historians. Who made such notations, when, and why become important questions with far-reaching implications. These few words themselves are unimportant, but scholars’ attitudes toward such inscriptions and the inferences that have been drawn from them need much reappraisal. “A bed / for woodstock” is a marginal inscription in the play usually called Thomas of Woodstock. These words were inscribed by the person usually labeled ‘‘the prompter” and, when discussed at all, are pigeonholed under the vague rubrics "prompt-directions” or “stage-directions.” And I agree to such labeling for some of the theatrical inscriptions; but various kinds of markings were inscribed in playbooks, and each kind, in its way, can reveal something of the way theater companies operated. To assume that all markings made in the theater served no other purpose than as prompt-directions is to erase some sharp distinctions and to muddle the processes in which a playwright’s manuscript was used in the theater.
