Bemerkungen
From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Zustand: Klaffender, minimal beriebener und bestoßener Einband. Ansonsten im sehr guten Zustand. / Condition: Gappy, minimally rubbed and scuffed binding. Otherwise in very good condition. - Content: When first I embarked on the project of collecting and editing the writings on Christianity by Leo Baeck, Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig, Will Herberg, and Abraham J. Heschel, I intended to write the introduction to each author's selections myself. But it then occurred to me that the cause of true Jewish-Christian dialogue would best be served if each introductory essay could be written by a Christian theologian reacting to the Jewish critique of Christianity from the standpoint of a committed Christian. This required five Christian theologians with established scholarly reputations in their own field of specialization, who also possess a thorough knowledge of the Jewish thinker whom they were to introduce. I chose four such scholars who were well known to me personally and one (Bernhard Casper of Freiburg in Germany) whom I had come to know through his writings. I invited their participation and asked them not only to write the usual expository essay, but to offer their own critical comment in a twofold manner: Where they disagreed with the Jewish author's critique of Christianity, they ought to state their disagreement without hesitation, and where they saw merit in his critique, they should indicate how this change in outlook might modify the Church's selfunderstanding and influence its future relationship to Judaism and the Jewish people. I was gratified that all five theologians responded positively to my unusual request. I wish to thank Professors J. Louis Martyn, Ekkehard W. Stegemann, Bernhard Casper, Bernhard W. Anderson, and John C. Merkle for their pioneering effort in this field of Judeo-Christian "mutuality." I hope that this modest but novel enterprise will stimulate other attempts in this direction. The five authors whose work is presented here did not always use the same method of transliteration for Hebrew words, and I have not attempted to achieve complete uniformity in this matter. Thus, for exampie, the reader may find the word "halakhah" (law) sometimes spelled halacha, halachah, or halaka. I want to express my thanks to Frank Oveis, who not only was my editor when this book first appeared but has undertaken to see the present paperback edition with its updated bibliography through the press. I want to thank those who translated material for this volume from the German: Dr. Elizabeth Petuchowski and my former students, Dr. Robert Schine and Bernard Barsky. My sincere thanks also go to Professor William W. Hallo of Yale University, who graciously gave permission to use his translations of Rosenzweig and Buber. I hope that where I have made revisions, I have caused no "disimprove-ments"! I want to express my appreciation to Chancellor Ismar Schorsch and former Provost Raymond P. Scheindlin for the support provided for my research by the Jewish Theological Seminary. During the years 1986-1988 they facilitated summer stipends from the Seminary's Maxwell Abbell Research Fund, which I gratefully acknowledge herewith. And finally, I wish to thank my wife, Lotte, who not only assisted with the task of proofreading, but whose patience, love, and gentle but persistent prodding made possible the planning and completion of this volume.
