The seal on petrol caps is an item tested every year at MOT time - if
yours is still the original it may be cracked / perished = a MOT fail.

Note that bmw originally fitted a V style seal to the cap - this is a  solid core O ring seal so not identical to orignal but more durable. See pictures:

1st Picture = new seal 
2nd Picture = type of petrol cap that this seal fits [ with new seal fitted]
