INTRODUCTION
IN the following pages the writer presents in a comprehensive form a general survey of the more important aspects of the construction, operation and maintenance of locomotives-steam, Diesel, electric, internal combustion, fireless, etc. Whilst historical matter has been more or less avoided, the development of locomotives from the somewhat elementary construction of fifty years ago is often referred to, so that the more refined details embodied in the machines of to-day can be more readily understood.
Locomotive design and construction will bear any amount of study and research, and in regard to many of the details it may truly be said that there are few which have not undergone considerable successive improvements before reaching the form in which we find them to-day. In operation and maintenance the progress has been remarkable during late years ; perhaps the example of the mass-produced motor car has had its effect on this problem in railway operation. Now repairs are carried out to a well-defined programme which ensures attention to every detail. The " belt " system, adopted in many of the large repair shops, coincides very closely with the procedure accepted for many of the modern mechanical industries. To make this possible, the standardization of parts has been a necessary operation, and where one railway could boast of, say, a dozen types of locomotives, to-day three or four are made to suffice ; even in these many of the important details are interchangeable.
The lay-out and furnishing of shops and sheds will prove interesting to many readers connected with the operation. The ever-increasing competition of the internal-combustion engine and its close associate, electric-traction, is referred to, and attention given to the rapid developments experienced during the past few years.
Much of the material has been taken from the experience of practical men as recorded in articles which have appeared in The Locomotive and its affiliated publications, and finally the thanks of both Author and Publisher are due to those Firms who have provided photographs, drawings or blocks necessary to illustrate their various products.
