From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Suppl: J. Linderski, Two Quaestorships. Reprintwd from Classical Philosophy, Vol. 70, No. 1, January 1975, pp. 35-38. - With author's dedication. - A pristine copy. - From the text: The problems encompassed in the title of the present note are not without interest: an emperor’s scornful allegation, a biographer’s attempt at a learned explanation, and the imagination of modern scholars have all contributed to making the story of Livia’s maternal grandfather and the Aufidii Lurcones both intricate and amusing. Suetonius seeks to refute the assertion of Caligula, expressed in a letter to the senate, that the maternal grandfather of Livia Augusta was of humble origin, only a decurion of Fundi. The biographer states : publids monumentis certum est Aufidium Lurconem Romae honoribus functum (Caligula 23. 2). There is no doubt that an Aufidius Lurco obtained honores in Rome (he may well be identified as one of the senatorial Lurcones of Cicero’s time, see below, part II), but Suetonius and his modern followers erred in taking him for Livia’s maternal grandfather : on the evidence of inscriptions the name of Livia’s mother was Alfidia M. f. (and not Aufidia). - Wikipedia: Jerzy Sever Linderski (born 21 August 1934 in Lwow, Poland, now Lviv) is a contemporary Polish scholar of ancient history and Roman religion and law.
