Antique Limoges France plate measuring 9 inches in diameter. It has one Nick to the edge in the 7 o’clock position which can be seen from the front and the back of the plate. With it you can see a slight crack to the plate from the knock about 1/2 inch from the edge. We can date this porcelain production by the white ware mark from 1904 -1906. Very few examples are found made by this company. This plate also bears the red decorators mark of William Barr for the dry goods company in St. Louis. Those that are familiar with St. Louis sometime ago might recognize the name BARR and wonder if that could be Barr as in famous Barr. I did some research and found that it was in fact one in the same. The first Famous Barr store was in fact known as William Barr’s Dry Goods Company and it was located at Sixth, Olive and Locust in St. Louis. It was established in 1849. It stayed William Barr‘s Dry Goods until 1911 where it became Famous and Barr and then Famous Barr and some of the history from there with the May company and such goes on. One other interesting note it was the first air condition store in the United States. All this to say this plate has some history to it.
