The frame lifts up and you can assemble a mix-match outfit to create a new fashion.  Place paper down and rub it with a crayon to get it to transfer.  The plates are typically double sided with some having textures to create patterns, rather than being different patterns themselves.  

Once you make the outfit (or hat or shoes), you cut them out and put them on the provided doll with their tabs folding over the doll.

The picture might look like there is an empty space in the kit--that is where a tiny pack of colored pencils would sit.  There are not plates missing.  You will need to supply the black crayons for rubbing and coloring items.
