This is an extremely rare, original 1970s womens shirt/jacket from Tommy Roberts’ pop art styled emporium, Mr Freedom.

This shirt (it could be worn as a lightweight jacket) is typically early 70s styled with a pointy cuff which you also see on contemporary clothes by Biba, Bus Stop and Ossie Clark.

Mr Freedom’s clothes were  bright & bold colours with pop art styling combined with a heavy dose of 1950s American rock n roll influence.

This shirt is white with a printed electric blue windowpane check with a bright pink and purple satin applique of a pair of Scottie dogs on the breast pocket.

Mr Freedom moved from 430 Kings Road in December 1970 and opened in Kensington Church Street until 1972 when he closed the shop for his new City Lights venture. So it’s very easy to date.

In 1970 that Elton John wore stage clothes from Mr Freedom on his American tour and the larger than life, brightly coloured, pop art style became part of the glam rock wardrobe.

In 1971 the British Council of Industrial Design described Mr Freedom as having an "unquenchable enthusiasm for all things bright and in outrageously bad taste".  So are the Scotties cute & fun or deliberately dubious taste?  I know what Elton would say.

A rare piece of rock n roll history.

Size

Bust measures 36 inches     Waist: 32 inches

Condition

It’s in good condition but does have an issue. There is one small hole between the middle two buttons. It’s only in the top layer of fabric and so it doesn’t go right through the garment. Also it’s not under any strain so it won’t get any bigger More importantly it is hidden beneath the wide overlap of the buttonhole side of the shirt. Apart from that one issue it’s really strong and completely wearable.
