The English painter and explorer, JOHN THOMAS BAINES (1820-1875), travelled extensively in Southern Africa, writing and painting his impressions. He arrived in Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, in 1842, and was the first professional artist to paint in South West Africa. He died in Durban, Natal, in 1875.

The set-of-4-stamps First Day Cover has a trilingual (English, Afrikaans, German) insert with details of Baines' exploits.
