Appointed full professor of classics at the University of Toronto in 1928, he headed the classics department of the university’s Trinity College from 1931 until his retirement. His translations of Aristotle’s Poetics, of Longinus’s On Great Writing, and of Plato’s Republic and other dialogues are renowned for their lucidity and tjieir sensitivity to nuance of argument and the interplay of philosophical ideas. The Greek and Roman Critics, one of his several original works, received the American Philological Association’s award for outstanding contribution to classical scholarship in 1968.
