Werner Drewes (1899–1985): Born in the village of Canig within Lower Lusatia, Germany. He showed an early talent both for painting and woodblock printing. He graduated from Saldria in 1917, then he was drafted by the German army and served in France from then until the close of the war. For a decade following the close of the war he studied, made paintings and prints, and traveled widely. Drewes is considered to be one of the founding fathers of American abstraction, he was one of the first artists to introduce concepts of the Bauhaus school within the United States. In 1984 a large retrospective at the Smithsonian American Art Museum was devoted entirely to his printmaking. A prolific printmaker, Drewes produced during his lifetime some 732 fine prints, including 269 etchings and drypoints, 30 lithographs, 14 celloprints, a lone silkscreen, and 418 woodcuts, of which 255 were in color.
