A highly important tool in the creation of furniture, this 19th-century French woodworker's lathe is itself an object of beauty. A remarkable piece of machinery, it is set in motion by the large foot treadle, which turns the larger wheel. This wheel is attached by a leather pulley to a spindle, which holds a block of wood in place with the help of a tailstock. As the lathe turned, an artisan would use a variety of tools, such as gouges and chisels, to shape the wood, placing them on the tool rest for stability. A machine such as this one would have been a craftsman's prized possession. Skilled artisan could create everything from pedestals and legs for the finest furniture to simple household items like candlesticks on a well-designed lathe. Pedal-operated models like this were first introduced in the Middle Ages, replacing the hand-cranked model and freeing a craftsman's hands to hold wood-turning tools.
