Triumph TR3A.
Introduced as the successor to the TR2, the similarly styled TR3 entered production in 1955 at a basic price of £950.00. With a 1991cc straight-4 OHV engine initially producing 95bhp,  a range of optional extras were available including a heater, seatbelts, overdrive, wire wheels, leather upholstery, radio, glass-fibre hardtop and an occasional rear seat. Developments came a year later with a new ‘high port’ cylinder head giving a further 5bhp, but far more importantly the TR3 became the first British production car to be fitted with disc brakes, following successful use in the Le Mans 24 hours race. Further improvements followed a year later with a facelift which provided the full width grille, external door handles and lockable boot handle. Although officially unrecognised by the manufacturers, this model became known as the TR3A. A larger 2138cc engine became available in 1959 which was also used on an American-market version unofficially labelled the TR3B which also used the new TR4’s all-synchro gearbox.
