This listing is for a vintage mid-20th century Sorrento Ware Music Sewing or Jewellery Box.

I am not sure of its exact age, but it has been in our family since the early 1970s and it was not new then, having some “age” even at that time. So, I’d guess at the 1950s or 1960s.

Approximate measurements are as follows:

Music box/top: 420mm x 320mm x 55mm (16.5” x 12.5” x 2”)

Legs: 445m (17.5”) length

Overall height: 500mm (19.5”)

It has the usual Sorrento Ware inlaid marquetry top, but this one has black painted legs. Although I did manage to track down a few with black legs online, they are fairly rare. Whilst restoring/refurbishing this item, I did sand the legs down to the original wood in a few places, but there were no signs at all that they had originally been varnished or stained and subsequently overpainted. The surface underneath was just plain bare wood, so I’m fairly certain that the painted black legs must be original.

Condition: The music box itself was (and still is) in full working order and has not therefore been inspected or serviced (sorry, I don’t know what tune it plays). As stated above, the table itself has been restored/refurbished, although as can be seen from the photos, some minor surface wear/scratches remain visible. However, overall the table, both inside and out, is in excellent cosmetic condition.
