ARTIST INFO:

This Swiss electronic band is led by Dieter Meier (4 March 1945, Zurich, Switzerland), the son of a millionaire banker, sometime professional gambler, performance artist, and member of the Switzerland national golf team. Meier provides the concepts whilst his partner Boris Blank (b. 2 October 1938, Switzerland) writes the music. Previously Meier had been a member of Periphery Perfume band Fresh Color and had released two solo singles. Teaming up with Blank and tape manipulator Carlos Peron to form Yello, the trio released the ‘I.T. Splash’ single on Periphery Perfume before signing a recording contract with Ralph Records in San Francisco, a label supported by the enigmatic Residents. Yello debuted with ‘Bimbo’ and the album Solid Pleasure in 1980. In the UK they signed to the Do It label, launching their career with ‘Bostich’, a track which had already become an underground club classic in America. The trio proved popular with the Futurist and New Romantic crowds, but their most lasting influence would be on the nascent dance music scene.

Chart success in the UK began after a move to Stiff Records in 1983 where they released two singles, an EP and You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess, the last album to feature Peron. A brief sojourn with Elektra Records preceded a move to Mercury Records in the mid-80s, where they released the highly popular albums Stella and One Second. On the latter they worked closely with Shirley Bassey and Billy MacKenzie (the Associates). ‘Oh Yeah’ provided the duo with their sole US chart entry, thanks to its inclusion on the soundtrack of the movies Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Secret Of My Success. Meier and Blank enjoyed major success with the UK Top 10 single, ‘The Race’ (from 1988’s Flag). Accompanied by a stunning video - Meier saw visual entertainment as crucial to their work - ‘The Race’ easily transgressed the pop and dance markets in the wake of the acid house phenomenon. The Yello blueprint, on which Meier mumbled his bizarrely imaginative lyrics over Blank’s inventive electronic beats, proved highly popular in London clubs when spun alongside Chicago house tracks.

By the early 90s the duo’s albums had begun to move into the realm of self-parody, and both Meier and Blank subsequently became more and more embroiled in cinema. Their soundtrack work includes Nuns On The Run, The Adventures Of Ford Fairlaine, Senseless, and the Polish-filmed Snowball, a fairytale whose creative impetus is entirely down to Yello. Meier and Blank also run Solid Pleasure, the innovative Swiss dance label, and their most recent works has shown a willingness to take on board developments in dance music by introducing contemporary techno and trance rhythms. In 1995, a ‘tribute’ album, Hands On Yello, was released by Polydor Records, with Yello’s music played by various artists including the Grid, Carl Craig, the Orb and Moby.
