Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, mit Randläsuren, Kopfschnitt angegraut, innen sauber / dust jacket rubbed, with edgewear, top edges grayed, clean inside. - The history of Athens is a subject of absorbing scholarly interest: this Greek city has, at different times and from different points of view, been cited as a model of moderate democracy, of humanism triumphant, or, on the contrary, as an illustration of the disorders due to demagogy or the misdeeds of imperialism. Professor Mosse looks beyond these judgments to discuss the exceptional destiny of Athens—a city which for two centuries dominated the Eastern Mediterranean world, which gave birth to a literature of singular richness, which was the home of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, Aristophanes and Thucydides, Plato and Epicurus, Pheidias and Praxiteles, and which then faded from the political scene when Rome set its powerful imprint over the whole Mediterranean. The history of Athenian democracy, however, does not, as is sometimes thought, end in 404 b.c., when the city capitulated to Sparta: Professor Mosse shows how it experienced another three-quarters of a century of greatness, and survived, more or less mutilated, under Macedonian domination. She examines the reasons for the final collapse and follows the stages of a decline which was not wholly without grandeur. / Contents ACKNOWLEDGMENTS INTRODUCTION 1 ATHENS AFTER THE END OF THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR 2 THE REBIRTH OF IMPERIALIST DEMOCRACY (404-359 B.C.) 3 THE CONFLICT WITH MACEDONIA (359-337 B.C.) 4 ATHENS AT THE TIME OF ALEXANDER 5 THE PERIOD OF DIADOCHOI 6 THE FINAL UPSURGE OF NATIONALISM: THE CHREMONIDEAN WAR.
