A pottery plate with face painting by Marie Madeline Jolly, for Le Triskel pottery workshop, Vallauris, France.

Marie Madeline Jolly at Le Triskel workshop in the 1950s-60s.  She worked extensively, and had an enduring friendship,  with Jean Cocteau.

The plate is signed to the back "Le Triskel", with the workshop logo.

The plate measures 19cm diameter.  The glaze to the front is matt finished.

It is in very good vintage condition.  There are a few small issues to note, so please do study the photographs carefully and ask any questions.

There are some, what look to be little pin-prick holes, like bubbles which have broken through the glaze.  Most noticeable on the black of the eyes - please see close ups.  There are several of these around the surface of the plate.  This may be normal for this type of glaze or pottery, I have no experience of it, but I have seen photographs of similar plates by this artist and have noticed a similar effect.

There is a glazing chip to the underside of the rim near the top of the design.  It is tiny as seen from the front, and mostly only noticeable from the back or side view.  I have shown photographs from both aspects.

There is another much smaller glazing gap further around the rim, which I think is not even a chip, but where the glaze has maybe worn or was missed.  Again please see photograph.

The colour is maybe not quite so bright a blue as shows in the photographs - it is a pale blue wash, like a water-colour wash.

I'm happy to answer any questions as best I can.  The information on the artist is just as I have acquired from the internet - I have no in-depth knowledge of her work.

Thank you for looking.
