HUBDOCTOR "BOA TYPE" L4 REPLACEMENT BASE AKA MOUNT, DIAL AND CABLE, .9 METER WIRE

INVENTORY REDUCTION - PRICE DROP

If you are familiar with the BOA ratchet lace system on road and MTB shoes you may also have encountered a broken stud in the sewn in base that the spool mounts on. I hate to throw away otherwise good shoes because I can't buy this part. I used my own shoe in the photos and wanted to share this solution with you, Please keep in mind that the BOA dial and spool on your shoe may also need to be swapped with the parts in this kit to work with this base. The BOA plastic is pretty brittle and the dial gets harder to release with time. A tip is to rock the dial and it will pop up easier. This kit comes with two replacement bases, two dials and spools and two .9 meter wire laces. You may had to replace the lace and had to buy a kit with many pieces that don't need replacement like the dial and inner spool. You probably have the mini hex tool and instructions (not included in this kit) from several repair jobs too. The wire is coated so chaffing should not be an issue. If your wire laces are good you can simply clip them and insert into the new spools included.

I used my own shoes in the photos and wanted to share this solution with you and a brief run down of the installation. Besides the mini hex tool, a pair of needle nose pliers with a wire cutter, a small prying awl to lift up the sewn in threads, 1 or 2 heavy sewing needles and waxed thread, a 1.6mm to 2mm drill is needed. It turns out that the broken BOA base can be pulled out of the shoe (see photo). Flexing the old BOA base will fracture the plastic on the sewn holes. Dig out all the plastic between the shoe layers and test fit the replacement bases. When you are happy with the alignment, drill a hole in the old stitching and through the rim of the new base, drill a second position one or two stitches over. Next, with a threaded needle find the drilled hole and pick up the drilled base hole (from the outside of the shoe) leave the needle engaged into the shoe if you have two needles, the insert the second needle through the stitch and base. Complete the knot on the inside of the shoe or pass the thread through more holes until you are satisfied with it and tie a knot. I placed threads at the wire inlets of the base and the middle. It may be possible to substitute the included wire instead of waxed thread but that may take larger holes in the shoe and more patience than I have. The ratchet size and inner diameter appear to be the same size as the BOA product and do engage the BOA dial but replacing all the pieces may work better.
