William Joseph Eastman (American 1881-1950) Oil Still Life 

William Joseph Eastman oil on canvas still life with peaches bottle and flowers, signed lower right, framed with french label on dorso ”toiles et Couleurs -Hardy-Alan – Paris”. Painting is 21 ¾” x 15 ¼”, and frame is 17½” x 24” The painting has some paint flake as shown in the close ups and the frame has some loss of gild and paint as alos shown in the pics.

 William Joseph Eastman was born in 1881 in Cleveland, Ohio. Eastman was a Clevelander who graduated from the Cleveland School of Art in 1912. Following a period at the Art Students League in New York, he became an instructor at the Cleveland School of Art.

During his career, Charles Burchfield became a friend, frequently working together and sharing ideas. He exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Art May Shows. He traveled extensively and painted in many countries over the years. He became the president of the Cleveland Society of Artists in 1931.
He was a tireless campaigner for promoting art and artists in Cleveland. Eastman passed away in 1950.

 

Alan Hardy, material supplier in Paris   The English-run art supply store Hardy-Alan sold paint, canvases and easels, famous painters patronised the shop, which did business from 1862 to 1933. Hardy-Alan manufactured its own canvases and paint in a workshop at 15 Avenue Victor Hugo in Vanves (then just outside Paris).
