"BOUNTY" IS MAIN ATTRACTION OF AUSTRALIAN FIRST FLEET REENACTMENT
Australia's Bicentenary Celebration organizers had invited a fleet of tall ships to participate in a re-enactment of the First Fleet arrival in Sydney in January, 1788.
Bounty: A replica of the 18th century HMAV Bounty, the 180-foot tall ship was built in New Zealand during 1978 and 1979, for the 1981 filming of the Mel Gibson movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" The full-rigged barque conformed externally to the original ship, but had a wood-clad steel hull and modern fittings.[13] Bounty sailed from Portsmouth in May, 1987, in company of 6 of the final eleven tall ships of the Fleet. She was tragically lost at sea during Hurricane Sandy on 29 October 2012, off the North Carolina coast. Her Captain and a crew member were drowned. .
Cachet: (blue ink) has the title H.M.A.V. "BOUNTY" / AT THE / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, and TABLE BAY / SEPTEMBER 10, 1987 with an image of "Bounty" between the text. The flap has an interesting summary of events regarding Captain Bligh and the "Bounty". She had called in at the Cape of Good Hope on 22 May 1788, en route to the South Seas. Bligh's amazing open boat voyage after the Mutiny, his reaching the Cape again in December 1789, and arrival back in England in January 1790, are also noted.
Ship Marking: double circle "Bounty" mark A * S * V (top) LONDON (base) vessel number 399924 / BOUNTY / GRT : 247 between the circles.
Condition: absolutely perfect, clean and fresh; NO blemishes of any kind. Any color variations are from my scanner.
Unsigned cover: Captain Adrian Small (Rio de Janeiro to Sydney) and First Mate Peter Manthorpe were being feted by the City of Cape Town, and there was insufficient time before sailing to sign the covers!
Franking: South Africa internal 16c Paarl Tercentenary stamp (Sc.#698, S.G. 620, Mi.#710, Yv.#627).
Postmark: Bilingual double circle DOCKS/DOKKE (top) CAPE TOWN/KAAPSTAD 10 IX 87 (base).
