 Nearly twenty-two and a half years have now passed since we were called to do the estate that had been closed up for seventeen years!

The Voodoo Estate!

This type of call usually gets us excited as they are a treasure trove. 
Located here in Florida, there was no electricity or running water so we rigged our own lighting and in we went.  If you have ever seen the Adams Family you will have some idea as to what we were greeted with!  Then the attorney handling the liquidation gave us some background.
 
The estate had belonged to an alleged powerful Voodoo Priestess/JooJoo Exorcist, grand daughter of a Marie Laveau, and favored daughter of a Marie Glapion.  These names meant nothing to us, but the late night talk of Voodoo and exorcism in the old mansion was enough to make us decide to spend the night in a hotel and return in the morning to assess the estate.  The rest is history.
 
Our research has shown that this woman was what she claimed and was indeed descended from a long line of well known Vodoun family originating in New Orleans in the early 1800's.
 
We were pretty unnerved by this until we discovered they were also devout Catholics!  Although I have to admit this was unlike any Catholic home we have ever been in and some of the items found inside were a little more than disconcerting.
 
There was no feeling of dread or unwelcome in the mansion, however there was quite a bit of contraband and other items we can or will not sell here.

Some Back Story  

This is one of two companion boxes recovered from what was named, "The LiDiex Chapel Room."  This was not the largest of the altar rooms but large nonetheless, as it measured 17 x 24 feet, but, it certainly was an unusual room that in describing, we could just as well be describing an ancient Cabinet of Curiosities.

It was indeed used as their chapel, "A place of solace and meditation where ancestors are revered" according to one of her journal entries.

Tibetan Monastery Shrine Room Leather Trunk with Stand

Her journals and inventory tell us, these trunks were some of the artifacts purchased and traded by the 1888 LiDiex, from a man they name only as, "the sorcerer and mountain monk merchant" over a three decade period.  It is the LiDiex journal entries that describe their initial meeting, with his coming upon the monks camp on a winter morning, "his appearance is that of a mad man, but he is lucid for conversation, has fuel, shelter and food and drink, so we decide to commiserate and palaver.  He is a maker and merchant trader of artifacts, amulets, charms and talisman, many of which he has fashioned from native ores procured in his travels.  ‘Business must be brisk!', I jokingly comment, as he is the first man we have made contact within a week."

1888 LiDiex
 
The research involved in this estate provides continuous fascination.  It is a man known only as "LiDiex", who is attributed with the procurement of this trunk.  Their journals tell us he was a 4th. generation descendant of the original Man Known Only as "LiDiex" to these shores who is alleged to be a survivor and saboteur of the slave Ship Henrietta Marie in 1701, who found his way to New Orleans to meet with the parents of the then infant Grandmother of our priestess, Marie Laveau.
 
The original LiDiex was a wood carver as were many of his descendants.  This is another case of the multi-generational relationships we have encountered with this family as the LiDiex all had a strong association with these women.
 
In her journals he is the least mentioned of these LiDiex, yet he kept a suite of rooms with her from the time of his sixteenth birthday.  Apparently he would leave for periods of up to a decade at a time before returning, shutting himself in her estate for lengthy periods before leaving again.  He is attributed with the design and consecration of the "Resurrection Skull Altar" and most of the ceremonial spells used in conjunction with it.  He is described as being "in excess of six feet of sinewy muscle, deceptively strong, easily matching two of his size in their grappling" and "extensively shaved, tattooed and pierced" in addition to "shown to be capable of high magic without devices."
 
Both their journals claim his ability to heal wounds, shape shift, travel through time and space, telepath, and create life with the power of his thought.  It is this LiDiex who is attributed with making her introduction to Alexandra David Neel and his journals tell of numerous meetings and short adventures with her.  Claiming at the age of twenty four to have met Neel for the second time in the company of Prince Sidkeong of Sikkim and of being her teacher of the Tibetan language having already spent six years with the Great Hermit as apprentice.  He also claims to have been "expelled by the Great Hermit for divulging Tulpa technique to the mystic whore."
 
Both their journals claim him to have mastered this ability to "thought form" at an early age, "born with it" as they note.  Much is already written on these subjects, so there is no need to elaborate here in this already overly long text, but we wholeheartedly recommend a cursory search for some very interesting reading.

But Back to the Leather Trunk
 
 The LiDiex had made a commercial contact with the initial meeting of this monk in 1928 and the estate made twenty-six large purchases from him over the next twenty-nine years, the last being in 1957.  This trunk being part of that acquisition.  Her inventory lists it as a "Tibetan Monastery Shrine Room Leather Storage Chest with Stand" and goes on to describe it and its contents as being meant for an unnamed monastery in Tibet.  It seems apparent their sorcerer monk merchant friend was also a thief, with these trunks being waylaid to the agents of this estate.  According to their inventory, the two boxes contained three Nepalese, gilded Buddha depictions in one and seven carved Tibetan quartz crystal skulls in the other.
 
Examination reveals a well made tooled leather covered pine box and stand measuring approximately 33" in length x 16.5" width x 33" in height (with stand).
 
The box itself measures approximately 33" x 16.5" x 17.5" and weighs 35 lbs., 1 oz, while the stand measures approximately 29" x 18" x 15.5" and weighs 13 lbs., 2 oz.

We believe the box is constructed of Himalayan pine and covered with 1/4" thick, vegetable tanned yak hide, specifically tanned  for hand tooling.  In this case, a double red deer and lotus bud motif that has been hand dyed by an indigenous method using an aqueous extract of the root of Rubia wallichiana for a traditional madder dye.

The symbolism of deer in Tibetan art usually includes a pair of deer and the dharma wheel, which we believe to be represented by the four winds symbol on the lid.

Deer are a direct reference to the first teaching in the Deer Park, Sarnath, by the Buddha.  The deer is a symbol of the personification of virtues and a character of legends and myths.  The suggestion is that so wondrous was the Buddha’s appearance and peaceful his presence that even the animals came to listen.  In the Tibetan tradition, a monastery which holds the sacred texts of Kangyur and Tengyur will have this symbol of deer and Dharma-wheel on the rooftop.

Its depiction is named as Sarnath Deer in her journal entries.  She, and some of her associates had visited the Sarnath Deer Park in India and the Nara Temple Park in Japan and comment on their visits in their journals.

One of her entries reads;
 "We had come to the Nara temple at Todai-ji to kneel before the largest bronze Buddha in the world, but it was our walks on the trails that captured my heart.  The Buddhist statues and the tea fields made for scenic, peaceful walks accompanied by the temple deer who danced and approached us without fear."

 Our own research revealed the Shinto legend of the God Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto, who rode a white deer into the city of Nara.  To commemorate this, the shrine at Kasuga-taisha was established in Nara in 768 C.E. and to honor Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto as well as the other Shinto Gods.  Since then, the gods send the deer as messengers that they are there to protect the city.

 Up until the 17th. century to kill a sacred Nara deer was a crime punishable by death.  Their sacred status changed to National Treasures post WWII.

Sarnath

Sarnath is a place located 10 kilometers north-east of Varanasi city near the confluence of the Ganges and the Varuna rivers in Uttar Pradesh, India.  The Deer Park in Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma, and where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna.  Singhpur, a village approximately one kilometer away from the site, was the birthplace of Shreyansanath, the Eleventh Tirthankara of Jainism.  A temple dedicated to him is an important pilgrimage site.

 Also referred to as Isipatana, this city is mentioned by the Buddha as one of the four places of pilgrimage to which his devout followers should visit.  It was also the site of the Buddha's Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, which was his first teaching after attaining enlightenment, in which he taught the four noble truths and the teachings associated with it.

 Sarnath has been variously known as Mrigadava, Migadaya, Rishipattana and Isipatana throughout its long history.  Mrigadava means "deer-park." "Isipatana" is the name used in the Pali Canon, and means the place where holy men (Pali: isi, Sanskrit: rishi) landed.

 The legend says that when the Buddha-to-be was born, some devas came down to announce it to 500 rishis.  Another explanation for the name is that Isipatana was so-called because, sages, on their way through the air (from the Himalayas), alight here or start from here on their aerial flight.  Pacceka Buddhas, having spent seven days in contemplation in the Gandhamadana, bathe in the Anotatta Lake and come to the habitations of men through the air, in search of alms.  They descend to earth at Isipatana.  Sometimes the Pacceka Buddhas come to Isipatana from Nandamulaka-pabbhara.

 Xuanzang quotes the Nigrodhamiga Jataka (J.i.145ff) to account for the origin of the Migadaya.  According to him, the Deer Park was a forest given by the king of Benares of the Jataka, where deer might wander unmolested.  The Migadaya was so-called because deer were allowed to roam about there unmolested.

 Sarnath derives from the Sanskrit Saranganatha, which means "Lord of the Deer", and relates to another old Buddhist story in which the Bodhisattva is a deer and offers his life to a king instead of the doe the latter is planning to kill. The king is so moved that he creates the park as a sanctuary for deer.  The park is active in modern times.

 Before Gautama (the Buddha-to-be) attained enlightenment, he gave up his austere penances and his friends, the Pañcavaggiya monks.  Seven weeks after his enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, Buddha left Uruvela and traveled to Isipatana to rejoin them because, using his spiritual powers, he had seen that his five former companions would be able to understand Dharma quickly.  While traveling to Sarnath, Gautama Buddha had no money to pay the ferryman to cross the Ganges, so he crossed it through the air.  Later when King Bimbisara heard of this, he abolished the toll for ascetics.  Gautama Buddha found his five former companions and enlightened them with the teachings of the Dharma.  At that time, the Sangha, the community of the enlightened ones, was founded.  The sermon, Buddha gave to the five monks, was his first sermon, called the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta.  It was given on the full-moon day of Asalha Puja.  Buddha subsequently also spent his first rainy season at Sarnath at the Mulagandhakuti.  By then, the Sangha had grown to 60 in number (after Yasa and his friends had become monks), and so Buddha sent them out in all directions to travel alone and teach the Dharma.  All 60 monks were Arhats.

 Several other incidents connected with the Buddha, besides the preaching of the first sermon, are mentioned as having taken place in Isipatana. It was here when one day, at dawn, Yasa came to the Buddha and became an Arhat.  It was at Isipatana, too, that the rule was passed, prohibiting the use of sandals made of talipot leaves.  On another occasion when the Buddha was staying at Isipatana, having gone there from Rajagaha, he instituted rules forbidding the use of certain kinds of flesh, including human flesh.  Twice, while the Buddha was at Isipatana, Mara visited him but had to go away discomfited.

 The Buddha delivered his first sermon in the deer park at Sarnath.  He preached the Four Noble Truths, the middle path and the Eightfold Path.  A statue in the park depicts the Buddha seated in Padmasana with his right hand turning the Dharmachakra, resting on a Triratna symbol, flanked on either side by a deer.  He is surrounded by five Bhikkhus with shaven heads. In the background, Vajrapani and other attendants, including probable princes, are seen.  

Besides the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta mentioned above, several other suttas were preached by the Buddha while staying at Isipatana, among them the Saccavibhanga Sutta, the Pañca Sutta (S.iii.66f), most popularly known by the somewhat misleading title the Anattalakkhana Sutta the Rathakara or Pacetana Sutta (A.i.110f), the two Pasa Suttas (S.i.105f), the Samaya Sutta (A.iii.320ff), the Katuviya Sutta (A.i.279f.), a discourse on the Metteyyapañha of the Parayana (A.iii.399f), and the Dhammadinna Sutta (S.v.406f), preached by the distinguished Bhikkhuni Dhammadinna to her former husband.

 Some of the most eminent members of the Sangha seem to have resided at Isipatana from time to time; among recorded conversations at Isipatana are several between Sariputta and Mahakotthita, and one between Mahakotthita and Citta-Hatthisariputta.  There is also a mention of a discourse in which several monks staying at Isipatana tried to help Channa in his difficulties.

 According to the Udapana Jataka, there was a very ancient well near Isipatana which, in the Buddha's time, was used by the monks living there.

 According to the Mahavamsa, there was a large community of monks at Isipatana in the second century B.C. for, we are told that at the foundation ceremony of the Maha Thupa in Anuradhapura, twelve thousand monks were present from Isipatana led by the Elder Dhammasena.

 Xuanzang, a Chinese Buddhist monk, who traveled to India in the seventh century, found fifteen hundred monks studying the Hinayana at the Isipatana.

 In the enclosure of the Sangharama was a vihara about two hundred feet high, strongly built, its roof surmounted by a golden figure of the mango.  In the center of the vihara was a life-size statue of the Buddha turning the wheel of the Law and to the south-west were the remains of a stone stupa built by King Ashoka.  In front of it was a stone pillar to mark the spot where the Buddha preached his first sermon.  Nearby was another stupa on the site where the Pañcavaggiyas spent their time in meditation before the Buddha's arrival, and another where five hundred Pacceka Buddhas entered Nibbana.

Close to it was another building where the future Buddha Metteyya received assurance of his becoming a Buddha.

 The Divy. (389-94) mentions Ashoka as intimating to Upagupta, his desire to visit the places connected with the Buddha's activities and to erect stupas there. Thus he visited Lumbini, Bodhimula, Isipatana, Migadaya and Kusinagara; this is confirmed by Ashoka's lithic records, e.g. Rock Edict, viii.

 The Bala Boddhisattva, an important statue for dating Indian art, was dedicated in "the year 3 of Kanishka" (circa 123 CE) and was discovered at Sarnath.

 Buddhism flourished in Sarnath because of kings and wealthy merchants based in Varanasi.  By the third century, Sarnath had become an important center for the arts, which reached its zenith during the Gupta period (4th to 6th centuries CE).  In the 7th century by the time Xuanzang visited from China, he found 30 monasteries and 3000 monks living at Sarnath.

 Sarnath became a major center of the Sammatiya school of Buddhism, one of the early Buddhist schools.  However, the presence of images of Heruka and Tara indicate that Vajrayana Buddhism was (at a later time) also practiced here.  Also, images of Brahminist gods as Shiva and Brahma were found at the site, and there is still a Jain temple (at Chandrapuri) located very close to the Dhamekh Stupa.

 At the end of the 12th century, Sarnath was sacked by Turkish Muslims, and the site was subsequently plundered for building materials.

 Isipatana is identified with the modern Sarnath, six miles from Varanasi. Alexander Cunningham found the Migadaya represented by a fine wood, covering an area of about half a mile, extending from the great tomb of Dhamekha on the north to the Chaukundi mound on the south.

 According to the Buddhist commentarial scriptures, all the Buddhas preach their first sermon at the Migadaya in Isipatana.  It is one of the four avijahitatthanani (unchanging spots), the others being the bodhi-pallanka, the spot at the gate of Sankassa, where the Buddha first touched the earth on his return from Tavatimsa, and the site of the bed in the Gandhakuti in Jetavana.

 In past ages, Isipatana sometimes retained its own name, as it did in the time of Phussa Buddha, Dhammadassi Buddha and Kassapa Buddha.  Kassapa was born there.  But more often Isipatana was known by different names (for these names see under those of the different Buddhas).  Thus in the time of Vipassi Buddha, it was known as Khema-uyyana.  It is the custom for all Buddhas to go through the air to Isipatana to preach their first sermon. Gautama Buddha, however, walked all the way, eighteen leagues, because he knew that by so doing he would meet Upaka, the Ajivaka, to whom he could be of service.

Sarnath is the birthplace of the 11th Tirthankara Shri Shreyansanatha Bhagwan.  It is the place where 4 of the 5 kalyanak (auspicious life events) of Shri Shreyansanatha Bhagwan took place.

 It is the place of 4 kalyanak of Shri Shreyansnath Bhagwan.  A huge ashtakod stoop (octagonal pillar), 103 feet in height is still present showing its historical establishment.  It is considered to be 2200 years old.  The main deity of this temple is a blue colored idol of Shri Shreyansnath Bhagwan, 75 cm in height, in Padmasana.  The artistic work of this temple is unmatched.

 Most of the ancient buildings and structures at Sarnath were damaged or destroyed by the Turks.  However, amongst the ruins can be distinguished:

 The Dharma Chakra Jina Vihar built by Kumaradevi, a wife of Gahadavala Govindachandra (c. 1114–1155 CE).  An inscription mentions the building of this massive vihara.  It mentions that Govindachandra had protected Varanasi from the Turushkas.  This was the last construction at Sarnath before it was devastated.

 The Ashoka Pillar erected here, originally surmounted by the "Lion Capital of Ashoka" (presently on display at the Sarnath Museum), was broken during Turk invasions but the base still stands at the original location.  The Lion Capital now symbolizes the modern state of India.  The Lion Capital served as the base of a large 32-spoke stone dharma-chakra, which was found broken into many pieces.  The seal of the Supreme court of India displays the Dharma Chakra as it must have originally appeared.

 The ruins of the Mulagandhakuti vihara mark the place where the Buddha spent his first rainy season.  This was the main temple marked by the presence of the Ashoka Pillar at the front.  The famous Sarnath Buddha in dharmachakra pravartana mudra was found in the vicinity.

 The Dharmarajika Stupa is one of the few pre-Ashokan stupas remaining, although only the foundations remain.  The rest of the Dharmarajika Stupa was removed to Varanasi to be used as building materials in the 18th century.  At that time, relics (bone fragments) in a casket, were found in the Dharmarajika Stupa.  These relics were subsequently thrown in the Ganges river, but the casket is preserved.

 The Chaukhandi Stupa commemorates the spot where the Buddha met his first disciples, dating back to the fifth century or earlier and later enhanced by the addition of an octagonal tower of Islamic origin.  In recent years it is undergoing restoration.

 Digambar Jain Mandir: while the current structure is from the 19th century, it occupies an ancient spot.

 The modern Mulagandhakuti Vihara is a temple built in the 1930s by the Mahabodhi Society, with beautiful wall paintings with a replica of the famous Sarnath Buddha in dharmachakra pravartana mudra.  Behind it is the Deer Park (where deer are still to be seen).

 The Sarnath Archeological Museum houses the famous Ashokan lion capital, which miraculously survived its 45-foot drop to the ground (from the top of the Ashokan Pillar), and became the National Emblem of India and national symbol on the Indian flag.  The museum also houses a famous and refined Buddha-image of the Buddha in Dharmachakra-posture.

 There is also a Bodhi tree planted by Anagarika Dharmapala which has grown from a cutting of the Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gaya.

 For Buddhists, Sarnath (or Isipatana) is one of four pilgrimage sites designated by Gautama Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Bodh Gaya, and Lumbini.

 Sarnath has been developed as a place of pilgrimage, both for Buddhists from India and abroad.  A number of countries in which Buddhism is a major (or the dominant) religion, such as Thailand, Japan, Tibet, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, have established temples and monasteries in Sarnath in the style that is typical for the respective country.  Thus, pilgrims and visitors have the opportunity to experience an overview of Buddhist architecture from various cultures.

The Lotus
 
The lotus also has several meanings, often referring to the quality of compassion and the related notion of the inherently pure potential of the mind.
  The lotus flower is a symbol of complete purity and rejection of all desecrations of the body, mind and speech.  The flower, which has its roots in the mud, deep at the bottom of the pond, nonetheless grows and is able to float immaculately and in sheer purity above the muddy waters.  So too, can one’s body, speech and mind learn to be free of desire and attachments.  The bloom of a Buddhist lotus has 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, 61, 100 or 1,000 petals and these same numbers can correspond to the body’s chakras or energy centers.  It is one of the most famous symbols of the Ashtamangala.  In terms of “body symbolism,” it is the symbol of “Lips.”  The Lotus is the Padma family of Buddhas in Mahayana, which symbolizes “speech.”

The trunk has brass hinges and a large ornate wrought iron lock and clasp, for which there is no key, but Uncle Waddy claims the lock can be easily manipulated and antique keys do exist that will fit, we just have not found one!

As noted above, these trunks were procured with Buddhist statuary and regionally sourced Tibetan rock crystal carved skulls.  This was the skull reliquary box and all seven skulls were there when we recovered it.  Five of these skulls had been dressed with gemstone eyes, gold leaf and/or applied magic symbols by those associated with this estate and their mistress.

   I might also add, our own Uncle Waddy had both of these trunks loaded onto his truck and they have remained in his collection for all of these years.  He had plans for the five skulls which had been dressed and they are part of the seventeen skulls he used in last year's blade rituals the concepts of which are disclosed in the write-ups for those items.

The Stand

Original to the trunk, it is a rare find in itself.  Also believed to be hand made of Himalayan pine, note the dovetail construction.  The stand is sturdy, easily accommodating the weight of the trunk and its contents.

The trunk and the stand are in excellent overall condition and are certainly a nicely aged vintage Buddhist artifact with an extraordinary provenance, that are much nicer than the photographs have been able to depict.

We have been contacted and visited by a number of people who were interested in the items from this estate since our first batch was listed.  Among the buyers have been known psychics and practitioners.  More than one, after adorning themselves or handling their purchase, stated, "this is a woman of power!"  Many of our customers, after receiving items from this estate have reported dream contacts and other unexplained phenomenon.

This is truly a rare opportunity to own anything with attributes to this estate.

The majority of this estate is now gone.  Most of what we had left, and it was considerable, has been split up and sold to a couple of private, foreign collector practitioners, never to be made available to the public again.  We made the decision to do this as we have had some pretty strange visits from even stranger individuals and there have been enough unexplained phenomenon going on in the warehouse where her things were kept that many of our employees refused to go in there.

The pieces offered and sold here are some of the few remaining pieces that will ever be offered to the public.

Nice addition to any collection, altar, wardrobe or decor, displays really well.
