Die Lebensdauer einer Kerze wird durch die Kraftstoffart, den Motorzustand, die Betriebszeiten und die Motortemperatur bestimmt. Bei 4-Takt-Motoren ab 250ccm sollten die Kerzen nach 6000km gereinigt bzw. gewechselt werden. Bei weniger Hubraum, besonders 2-Takt, ca. alle 2500km. Ölkohleablagerungen führen nach dieser Kilometerlaufleistung zu Startschwierigkeiten und durch die Zündkerze bedingten Leistungsverlust.
