Maine Central GP7 572 wears one of the best known classic EMD
paint schemes. Based on EMC's FT demonstrator scheme of 1939, this same styling with different colors was used on the MEC, B&M, LV and D&RGW along with a number of switchers and short lines. In January 1979
the 572 was freshly repainted in its historic colors and returned to regular MEC freight service. It is shown here outside the enginehouse
at Lewiston Lower, Maine, in September 1981. Kodachrome by Jim Boyd and Preston Cook. The newest engine on the Coors roster, SW1001 C998 idles in the East Yard of the Golden, Colo., brewery complex as the morning Burlington Northern train arrives on Track 21. The story of the Coors railroad begins on page 36. Kodachrome: Greg Monroe

What better way to spend a winter day than photographing a southbound San Diegan at Oceanside, California, in beautiful 85sunshine? With the Pacific surf pounding the beach just beneath the Santa Fe's "Surf Line" between Los Angeles and San Diego, F40 214 leads No. 572 through Oceanside on February 19, 1984. See page 34 for the story of this "Escape from Winter." Kodachrome: Jim Boyd.

The "T" on the number plate and small television camera just to the left of the headlight are about all that give this scene away as being 1985 instead of 1950. With the thermometer hovering near zero, American Coal Enterprises' C&O 4-8-4 614T simmers the night away on January 23, 1985, at Hinton, W.Va., in the midst of a month of six-day-a-week test runs with coal trains on the C&O main line between Huntington and Hinton. The "T" stands for "Test" and "Tomorrow," for the 614T is being utilized to gather data to be used in the design of a new generation of coal-burning steam locomotive. The story unfolds on page 34. Kodachrome by Jim Boyd.

Three six-motor Alcos-RSD12s or DL702s, your preference-head a "Coal and Scale Extra" over Morgan Trestle near Eagle Mills, Michigan, on July 19, 1984. The Lake Superior & Ishpeming still rosters numerous Alcos and some distinctive six-motor GEs. Sandy Burton tells how to railfan this Upper Peninsula ore carrier in his story which begins on page 48. There is something absolutely regal about a Union Pacific steam locomotive, and that image is captured by Challenger 3985 as she begins her back-up move after posing for "roster shots" during the second photo stop of the May 26, 1985, Rocky Mountain Railroad Club excursion over Sherman Hill. Read all about it, beginning on page 38. Kodachrome by Jim Boyd.  Freshly lettered Western Maryland, ex-Milwaukee FP7 97C pauses alongside the Chessie/WM depot at Highfield, Md., working the daily Maryland Midland road job up from Union Bridge on August 2, 1985, in the company of an ex-BN SD24. For the story of the Maryland Midland, see the article beginning on page 50. Kodachrome by John Meise.
