THIS REMARKABLE FRENCH ROCOCO STYLE SILVER SNUFF BOX, BEARING THE HANAU, GERMANY  (SIMULATED ANCIENT FRENCH HALLMARKS)" OF RENOWN SILVERSMITH GEORG ROTH, BEARS THE UNIQUE ADDITION OF TWO HAND-PAINTED MINIATURE PORTRAITS UNDER BEVELED GLASS.

THE PORTRAITS ARE AFFIXED TO THE LID, ONE OF A UNIFORMED ROCHAMBEAU LEFT AND WASHINGTON RIGHT, BOTH ALLIES AND HEROES OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR, SURROUNDED BY BEADED ORNAMENT, A MEDAL CROSS INCISED BETWEEN AND LAUREL FOLIAGE ABOVE AND PALMS WITH ROSES BENEATH. REPOUSSE STYLIZED FLORAL SCROLLS AND A CARTOUCHE ADORN THE SIDE OF THE BOX.

THIS BEAUTIFUL SNUFF BOX SHOWS THE ORIGINAL GILDING ON THE INSIDE. IT IS HALLMARKED ON THE BOTTOM WITH 3 ANTIQUE FRENCH-LIKE ROCOCO HALLMARKS ATTRIBUTED TO GEORG ROTH.

AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY, AND TO SATISFY CUSTOMER DEMAND AND PREFERENCES, COPIES OF OLD SILVER AND OTHER ITEMS FROM VARIOUS PERIODS OF HISTORY WERE PRODUCED.
