Bemerkungen
Slightly bumped, otherwise good and clean. From the Preface by John E. Reinhardt: Strangers penetrating carefully developed environments have exhilarated or exasperated peoples and nations from the beginning of time, for tribalism is as old as time. When Ruth cried out “Whither thou goest . . she was placing emphasis on the cohesiveness of the relationship, on preserving the bond in any circumstance. Ruth’s was a positive and confident view, but often it is difficult to predict the response when tribes are pierced from without. Interior tampering is tolerable, but one is warv of the outsider. Only nomenclature and prejudice have prompted us to equate tribalism exclusively with Africa. While westerners generally point up the political instability supposedly inherent in African tribalism, the fact is that considerable cultural strengths stem from the tribe: pride in community, religious and linguistic enhancement, loyalty to leaders, and fidelity to binding ties. Strengths and weakness aside, distinctive cohesive societal units have marked the course of African development.
