"Edward Gibbon (8 May 1737 – 16 January 1794) was an English essayist, historian, and politician. His most important work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788, is known for the quality and irony of its prose, its use of primary sources, and its polemical criticism of organised religion."

General wear to covers and spines. Some damage to outer hinge of volume 9 as singled out in the photos. Set is ex-libris of William Edward Piercy Austin with bookplates. Contemporary owner signature on title pages as shown. Books otherwise unmarked. Very minor foxing to prelim pages of a couple of volumes and the odd age spot. General aged patina to pages. Pages and folding maps remarkably clean and present very well. Books present very well overall and are a wonderful example of Gibbon's famous 12 volume set.  Please study photos to understand condition. Happy to provide more photos on request.
