THE SPELL OF THE PACIFIC - An Anthology of Its Literature

From 1949, a wide-ranging collection of travel adventures, short stories, memoirs, etc., all set among the lands and sea of the South Pacific. The list of authors reads like a who's who of names associated with this region: Herman Melville, William Bligh, Robert Louis Stevenson, Joseph Conrad, Paul Gauguin, Jack London, etc., etc.

The editors are Hawaiian historians Carl Stoven and Arthur Grove Day. The introduction is by James A. Michener (only his third appearance in book form). Michener and Day were later to collaborate Rascals in Paradise.

This copy is signed by the editors on the title page. The Spell of the Pacific had only one printing and is very rare. This is the only signed copy currently being offered online.

The book is complete with the dustjacket, although the jacket is in quite poor condition -- looks acceptable in its mylar sleeve. The book itself is in much better shape. The covers show some general handling, along with a light cup ring on the front panel. The binding is a little soft but still holding well. The text is toned with age and has just a few corner creases; no writing, tears, stains, etc.

In all a presentable copy of this unique collector's item.
