Alvin Lee's 1959 Gibson ES-335 as played at Woodstock in 1969.
Purchased in 1963 for £45, Alvin bought this cherry red 1959 Gibson ES-335 in Nottingham, UK and used it as his main instrument throughout his career, constantly changing it with a variety of stickers. He wasn’t happy with the stock sound and wanted to add the hollow sound produced by Fender so he added a single coil Stratocaster pickup to the middle position, then later installed its own volume control. The original dot neck was broken when he accidentally hit the low ceiling at the Marquee Club. The guitar was sent to Gibson for repair and when it returned the broken neck had been replaced with one carrying the pearloid block inlays and had been equipped with Grover Rotomatic machine heads.
It’s illustrated here as it was when Ten Years After tore up the stage at The Woodstock Music and Art Fair in August 1969.

The illustration of this famous guitar is original and has been produced by George Morgan following extensive research.
