DURING JAPAN’S EDO PERIOD, THE FEUDAL DOMAINS OF JAPAN ISSUED HANSATSU SCRIP (CLAN NOTES) FOR USE WITHIN INDIVIDUAL DOMAINS. THIS FORM OF EARLY PAPER CURRENCY SUPPLEMENTED THE COINAGE OF THE SHOGUNATE. MOST SCRIP CARRIED A FACE VALUE IN SILVER COINAGE, BUT ALSO GOLD AND COPPER VALUES CIRCULATED. ADDITIONALLY, SOME WERE MARKED FOR EXCHANGE IN KIND FOR CERTAIN COMMODITIES SUCH AS RICE.

THE FIRST JAPANESE BANKNOTES, CALLED YAMADA HAGAKI, WERE ISSUED AROUND 1600 BY SHINTO PRIESTS ALSO WORKING AS MERCHANTS, AND EXCHANGED FOR SILVER.

IN 1871, THE MEIJI GOVERNMENT OF MEIJI ABOLISHED OF THE HAN SYSTEM, AND ORDERED THE EXCHANGE OF ALL SCRIP FOR THE NATIONAL CURRENCY.
