Drawing of a 3 young man resting.

By 20th c. American artist Walter Stuempfig (1914-1970).

Stuempfig was a prolific artist who lived and worked in Philadelphia PA. He is best known for his paintings of young men and scenes of Philadelphia area landscapes and city life. He was married to fellow PAFA artist Lila Hill.

After attending Germantown Academy, he enrolled at University of Pennsylvania for architecture, but later transferred to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where he studied under Henry McCarter, Daniel Garber, and Francis Speight. He himself later taught at PAFA from 1948-1970.

Stuempfig later traveled around Europe with an interest in late 16th- and early 17th-century Italian artists such as Caravaggio. He also developed interest in Edgar Degas and American artist Thomas Eakins, who would have a strong influence on his work. Stuempfig referred to his own work as “romantic realism”.

While teaching at PAFA, Stuempfig would invite his students to join him in the countryside outside of Philadelphia to paint, including an abandoned quarry.

Stuempfig exhibited in Philadelphia, New York and Washington DC, including a one-man show in 1943. He exhibited regularly at the Pennsylvania Academy's Annual Exhibitions from 1932 to 1966.

Among his awards were the PAFA Cresson scholarship for foreign travel and the Benjamin Altman prize from the National Academy of Design.

Stuempfig was a member of the Century Association and the National Academy of Design and was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1963.

His works are in the collections of Corcoran Gallery; Whitney Museum; and Museum of Modern Art as well as Malcolm Forbes, who acquired over 100 of Stuempfigs works.
