This is an antique (c. 1890) Meiji era Japanese lidded lacquer soup / rice bowl.  It is all hand turned cryptomeria wood with over 20 thin coats of Japanese urushi black lacquer with makie (raised gold) on the rim of the bowl and the lid. The lid fits nicely on the bowl.

Having been in storage for over a century, with exception to very minor signs of past use this lidded bowl remains in good polish and in very good condition. The bowl measures 4 3/4" in diameter by 2" tall (12 x 5 cm). The lid fits over the bowl and measures 5 1/8" in diameter and when on the bowl increases the overall height to 2 3/4" (7 cm).
