This is a hand forged lock from a Japanese tansu chest from the early Meiji  period (c. 1870). It has all of its original patina including burnt lacquer protective finish.   It is still operational with included key (see pictures).   Known as a single action lock, the lock can be engaged with poush of the big "button" on the front (see picture 12).  The key is used only in unlocking.

With exception of minor signs of past use, (minor oxidation, and an aged patina) this tansu lock remains in overall  very fine condition.  It measure 4 3/4" wide by 4 1/4" tall by 1/2" thick (11  x 10.5 x 1.5 cm).
