One issue with the finial drive system of the Honda's XR line of bikes is the thin OEM front sprocket quickly wearing the output shaft leading to break downs way out there or a very costly repair ( replacement of the transmission output shaft ). Another issue is, Honda put the teeth to one side of the sprocket. This causes the drive loads to pull the sprocket to one side making for more shaft wear on the outside end of the shaft. Because of this when the sprocket gets loose it yaws on the shaft making a rumble in the drive line. Additionally, since the OEM sprocket only fits the shaft one way, only one side of the teeth of the front sprocket can be used.

A way to reduce the wear on the output shaft is to use a front sprocket with a hub length that covers all available spline on the output shaft. The greater contact area reduces the load on the shaft teeth. The uneven shaft loading can be corrected by placing the sprocket in the middle of the hub. This makes for balanced loading of the drive force through the output shaft to the sprocket. The Balanced Design makes the sprocket symmetrical so that it can be installed either way and this allows for the use of both sides of the teeth effectively doubling the sprockets life.

There is some mis-alignment with the balanced design ( 2.2 mm ) but given replacing the chain and sprockets is easier than rebuilding the motor to replace the output shaft and you get double life from the sprocket its a pretty good trade off.

Most everybody agrees they prefer to have the reduced output shaft wear..

Bear in mind you can't wear one side of the teeth all the way through, then flip the sprocket, and expect double life. You must reverse when a normal wear pattern develops.

Now you can have minimum output shaft wear with full spline contact hub, smooth running from the balanced load design on the XR400's shaft, double sprocket life from rotating the sprocket either way, and straight up no hassle installation with the OEM two bolt retainer and fasteners or with our Quick Change clip style retainer ( See our other items ). Our sprockets are machined from alloy steel that in every way is comparable to OEM Honda and the best offered by other manufactures. The sprockets are then given a heat treatment that provides a compatible sprocket for the Honda output shaft and longest wear life possible.

All shipped free to the lower 48 states. We ship internationally and recommend EBay international shipping option.

Our warranty extends to the fit of the sprocket to a stock, un-modified 1996 to 2004 Honda XR400R's. We are sorry but since we have no control over the environment this sprocket is to be used in wear is not covered by warranty. However, our sprockets are manufactured using the same processes as other manufactures so the wear life of one side of your sprocket will be the same or better than sprockets from other manufactures.
