GOOD to VERY GOOD
CONDITION
This sale is for a
vintage edition entitled “Mortal Coils,”
subtitled “Five Stories,” by Aldous Huxley,
with illustrations.
It was published
by Penguin Books Ltd., of Harmondsworth, Middlesex, in association with Chatto
and Windus, in 1955 and is the FIRST PRINTING in this form (vintage paperback,
formerly published in hardback in 1922).
The stories are:
·
"The Gioconda Smile" a
mixture of social satire and murder story, which Huxley later adapted into
a film called A Woman's Vengeance (1948).
·
"Permutations Among the Nightingales"
a play concerning the amorous problems encountered by various patrons of a
hotel.
·
"The Tillotson Banquet" which tells
of an old artist who was thought to be dead, and is "rediscovered"; a
not entirely successful honorary dinner is organised for him.
·
"Green Tunnels" about the boredom
of a young girl on holiday with her family. She develops a romantic fantasy and
is ultimately disillusioned.
·
"Nuns at Luncheon" a second-hand
story told of a nun falling in love. The story mocks the writer's process, a
concept Huxley used in his novel Crome Yellow.
Aldous Leonard
Huxley (1894-1963) was an English writer and one of the most prominent members
of the famous Huxley family. He was best
known for his novels, short stories, essays, poetry, travel writing, film
stories and scripts.
He was a humanist
and pacifist, but was also interested in spiritual subjects namely
parapsychology and philosophical mysticism. By the end of his life he was considered a
leader of modern thought and an intellectual of the highest rank. He was also well known for advocating and
taking LSD, including on his death bed.
The book measures 7.1
inches x 4.5 inches and has 134 pages.
The book is in good,
neat condition for a softback of its age, with a previous owner’s signature at
the front, a little light foxing to the rims/inside the covers, and no other
ink or pencil markings in the book. The

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices
from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs. However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically changed
on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their
control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels
being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the
World).
These costs are a direct result of:
“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best
value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are
significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view
of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”
If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in
the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement
Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.
Unwinsbooks always
obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail. Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be
sent by courier (customer will be informed).
Goods will be WELL PACKAGED by Unwins Books
and dispatched once payment has cleared.
