GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION

This sale is for a vintage edition entitled “Is Sex Necessary?” subtitled “Why You Feel the Way You Do,” by James Thurber and E. B. White, with 52 illustrations by James Thurber.

It was published by Penguin Books, of Harmondsworth, Middlesex, in association with Hamish Hamilton, in 1960 and is the FIRST PRINTING in this form (vintage paperback, formerly published in hardback in 1929).

A collection of comic essays as a spoof on the many popular books on Freudian sexual theories published in the 1920s. In a preface for a later 1950 edition, White recalled, "Thurber and I were neither more, nor less, interested in the subject of love and marriage than anybody else of our age in that era. I recall that we were both profoundly interested in earning a living, and I think we somehow managed, simultaneously, to arrive at the conclusion that. . . the heavy writers had got sex down and were breaking its arm. We were determined that sex should maintain its high spirits.

White and Thurber wrote alternate chapters, then compared them for overlap. They invented numerous pseudo-sexual terms, including Diversion Subterfuge, Osculatory Justification, and Schmalhausen Trouble. They also fabricated the names of psychologists and sex researchers, including Dr. Karl Zaner and Dr. Walter Titheridge.

The contents include:

·       The Nature of the American Male: A Study of Pedestalism

·       How to Tell Love from Passion

·       A Discussion of Feminine Types

·       The Sexual Revolution: Being a Rather Complete Survey of the Entire Sexual Scene

·       What Should Children Tell Parents?

·       Frigidity in Men

…and more…

The book measures 7.1 inches x 4.5 inches and has 136 pages (including illustrations).

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs.  However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the World).

These costs are a direct result of:

“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”

If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.

Unwinsbooks always obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail.  Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be sent by courier (customer will be informed).
