Appears to have been struck in July of 1689

This type of coinage is known as gun money because everything in the Scottish towns was melted down to make the coinage in order to fund the revolution that was intended to see the James II return to power

They melted down everything they could find including church bells pots and pans and and supposedly bronze guns and anything that they could find that had any precious metal content.

Rare proof strikes were issued in silver and gold for heads of state in order to show the power of the currency so that they could find backers for the Scottish revolution.
