A rare eighteenth century engraving by Jacques Chereau (1688-1776) after a painting by Domenico Feti (1589-1624).
Titled 'David' it depicts King David as a young man, standing beside a plinth on which rests the head of the giant Goliath. David holds a sword in his left hand.
The story is a allegorical reminder that it is possible for an individual to triumph against immense odds.
Subtitled 'Tableau de Dominque Feti, qui est dans le Cabinet de M. Crozat. Peint sure toile, haut de 3 pieds 2 pouces, large de 2 pieds 5 pouces, grave par Jaques Chereau'. The number 105 printed bottom right corner which is the number given to it in the 'Recueil Crozat'.
Joseph Antoine Crozat, Marquis de Tugny, commissioned engraved reproductions of famous paintings and drawings, mostly after the Italian Masters. The first 140 plates were published in 1729, a further 42 followed in 1740. After his death the original plates were used to publish a full set which were offered to the public circa 1740.
This print is published on laid paper and has been loosely pasted (three spots of paste down each side) to a sheet of later paper with German writing.
It is in good condition but note a dark spot caused by the paste in the top left corner.
Measures 34 x 25cm.
