This sale is for a vintage hardback edition entitled “Mr. Facey Romford’s Hounds,” by the author of “Handley Cross,” “Mr. Sponge’s Sporting Tour,” “Ask Mamma,” Etc., Etc., - R. S. Surtees [Robert Smith Surtees (1805-1864)] - with 24 COLOURED plates and a woodcut by John Leech (1817-1864) and “Phiz” - Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882).

 

It was published by Methuen & Co., Ltd., of Essex Street, London and is the 1930 Sixth Edition.  The book was founded on the Edition published by Bradbury & Evans in 1865.

 

R. S. Surtees or Robert Smith Surtees (1805-1864) was a Master and huntsman of foxhounds and harriers, and was a literary critic and the author of several classic Victorian hunting and sporting books such as “Handley Cross,” “Jorrocks’s Jaunts and Jollities,” “Mr. Sponge’s Sporting Tour” and various others, set during the Golden Age of foxhunting in which the English sporting artists such as John Leech and Henry Alken.

 

The book measures 6.75 inches x 4.5 inches x 1.5 inches and has 438 pages + colour illustrations. 

 

The book is in good, neat condition for its age, with wear to the original cloth hardback cover (frayed to the top of the spine), with a previous owner’s signature at the front and no other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages or plates (frontispiece has small tears to the rims).  There is no dust-jacket.

 

A wonderfully illustrated vintage edition.

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs.  However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the World). 

 

These costs are a direct result of: 

 

• An increase of more than 100% in the fees the US Postal Service (USPS) charges for the delivery of international mail.

 

• Securing air freight at inflated market costs due to a 95% reduction in air passenger flights globally. This has not affected domestic or postage within the EU.

If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.

 

Unwinsbooks always obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail.  Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be sent by courier (customer will be informed).
