An original oil painting by listed Southampton artist John Ferry (active 1897-1929). This is one of three works by this artist that I am listing for sale including another smaller of the same scene without the figures - see my ebay shop.

This is a landscape, two fgures on the grass, perhaps picking wild flowers. Near them is a wooden style leading to a meadow where sheep are grazing, a gateway opposite.  The view framed by the arching branches of a large tree.

Signed lower right 'J. Ferry'.  A label verso transferred from backing paper reads 'Bassett Green, Southampton by J. Ferry'  Not dated, but the other one depicting the same scene is 1926 so I assume this would be of a similar time. 

Bassett Green was a small village near Southampton which has now been much developed and become a suburb of the City.  

Painted in oils on canvas board and in very good original condition.  Presented in an antique carved giltwood frame which has signs of age but remains presentable. 

Measures 34 x 44cm including the frame, the painting only is 24 x 34cm.

John Ferry was born in St Mary, Southampton and attended Southampton School of Art where he won a number of prizes for his work.  He then became a teacher at the School of Art and also worked as a carver and gilder.  He was a member of Southampton Art Society and exhibited with them regularly, mostly scenes around Southampton and the New Forest, between around 1890 and 1930. A small number of his paintings are held in the collection of Southampton City Art Gallery.
