COVER: Large detail of Cours Mirabeau, Oil, 10 1/2 X 18 1/2, by Mark Daily. Photo: Sandra Wilson gallery.

FORUM PAGE: Must an Artist Know Landscape In Order to Paint It?, by Alan Gussow and Raul Resika.

MARK DAILY: A NEW TRADITIONALIST, by Mary Carroll Nelson. This young painter from New Mexico depicts his environment with juicy strokes of oil paint, brilliantly illuminated and avoiding extraneous detail.

ROBERT SINGLETON: REACHING BEYOND, by Kit Young. Taking his native South as inspiration for his work, Singleton used the terrain as the basis for his growing development as an abstractionist. A handsome picture story describes this evolution.

WATERCOLOR PAGE: AVEL DE KNIGHT: Working exclusively in casein, this unusual artist creates an almost magical quality in what he calls his "mirage series.".

DRAWING ON MARBLE, by Howard L. Munns. With waterproof sepia drawing ink and various pen points, the effects of engravings, etchings, scratchboard and pen drawings are achieved on an exciting new surface by this Los Angeles artist.

GENEVIEVE WILHELM: DRAWINGS FOR REFERENCE, by Charles Movalli. Wilhelm's drawings are not created for final products but are used as reference for her finished paintings. Her casual, beautifully executed drawings demonstrate why the artist should develop strong drawing skills.

OSVALDO MENEGOL: SCULPTOR OF THE SEA, by Diane Casella Hines. From the small Puerto Rican island of Vieques comes an unusual artist who develops sea forms from Plexiglas, bleached cattlebone, Asubo, and other hard woods, unusual media for traditional subjects.
