"Flight of Eagles is the story of the adventures of a group of volunteer American pilots who formed an escadrille and fought and flew for Poland in the Polish-Russian War of 1919-1920.  They called themselves the Kościuszko Squadron in honor of the 30 year old Polish Officer, Tadeusz Kościuszko who served the cause of freedom during the American Revolutionary War. Captain Merian C. Cooper conceived the idea of the squadron and Major Cedric E. Fauntleroy was its first commanding officer.
Flying patched-up, semi-obsolete Austrian and Italian surplus planes of World War I, they challenged the sabers and ground-fire of Cossack hordes.  Not one of the Americans in the Kościuszko Squadron was of Polish ancestry, but they served with such intensity and skill that they won Poland's highest military honors. Three of the men were killed before the terms of their commissions were completed. Flight of Eagles is the dramatic narrative of that intrepid air unit which fought under the red and white Polish banner" [from the back of the dust jacket]
