Minolta MC Rokkor-X PG 50mm F1.4 Fast Prime Lens

Manual Focus

Lens works 100%

Over the course of 30 years from 1960's to 1990's Minolta made 10 versions of f/1.4 lens in the normal lens range (50 to 58mm). This MC Rokkor-X PG is the sharpest version of all. And its build quality is also the best, made with metal and glass, and its helicoid is brass (vs. aluminum in most lenses in this class of lenses from the era), with the confidence inspiring heft.

The lens is in Minolta manual focus MC mount (also known as SR mount) but can be adapted to various mirrorless 4/3, micro 4/3, NEX, FX cameras (Sony Olympus Panasonic Fujifilm etc) - no adapter is included here. You will have to buy your own.

However these lenses were from 1973 and are about 50 years old, and generally need service to restore their performance. The main culprit is the grease in the lens. After decades of use (or disuse) it usually has separated and the lighter oil part has evaporated and condensed onto the internal glass surfaces to form a film of numerous tiny oil droplets (oil haze) - very detrimental to image quality as it softens the image quite a lot. The oil haze is much worse than a little swirls of cleaning mark on the coating or a few sporadic dust particles inside the lens.

Some of the lenses, if they have experienced hot/cold conditions for example in a storage unit, the lighter oil may have got onto the blades to cause a sluggish or completely stuck aperture. Even if not yet on blades, often the oil has crept close to the aperture cartridge and before long it will get onto the blades. The grease on the focus helicoids may have deteriorated (separated, lighter oil is gone, heavier part has gummed up) to cause a stiff focus ring or very loose focus action with some play. If the lens has been on beach or in dusty environment, the focus action may be gritty.

The lens for sale here has just been serviced. We cleaned it inside out. Internal glass surfaces have been cleaned. The focus helicoids has been stripped of old grease and re-greased. Oil in vicinity of the aperture cartridge as well as gummed up grease at various places has been cleaned off. The lens will serve you many more years without you worrying about those issues mentioned above.

The lens glass is clear and bright glass with no scratch or haze or fungus. If you shine strong light through the lens you may see a little tiny dusts - it is normal and has no effects on lens performance.

The lens mechanics is in excellent shape. The aperture blades have no oil and are snappy. Focus ring is smooth with nice, proper resistance. Aperture ring clicks positively to every stop. Filter threads are good. Filters screws on/off without effort.

Cosmetically the lens is in fair to good condition. The barrel overall looks pretty good and clean. The "fair" is for the filter ring. It had a dent. We fixed the dent so filters can screw on without effort but you can see the marks at where the dent was. Otherwise the lens barrel just show some minor bright spot and small wear marks. All lettering crispy and bright. See photos for cosmetics.

Includes a pair of generic caps and a Japan skylight filter as shown. Filter has good glass though the metal ring has some bright spots.
