Second edition of this important work on the making of the U. S. Constitution, first published in 1821 and mainly consisting of an account of the 1787 Constitutional Convention by participant Robert Yates, who later served as a New York State Chief Justice. Yates, an anti-Federalist, left the convention because he felt its inclination to form an entirely new form of government without securing the rights of states was a bridge too far. He subsequently lobbied against ratification. As for the inscription in this book, Amos Lawrence (1814-1886) was a patron and namesake of Lawrence Academy (formerly Groton Academy) in Groton, Massachusetts (not to be confused with Groton School in the same town). He was also a donor to abolitionist efforts.
