What is the BLUE GREEN ALGAE?
Blue-green algae (BGA), also known as cyanobacteria, are one of the photosynthetic prokaryotes found in aquatic ecosystems. Certain BGA species, including Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Spirulina platensis, Spirulina maxima, Spirulina fusiformis. BGA have been widely consumed by humans for centuries. Human consumption is traced back to the 14th century Aztec civilization, while the earliest human use of it was recorded 1600 years ago in China.
BGA are nutritious natural products rich in essential amino acids, linolenic acid, fibers, B vitamins, calcium, phosphorous, iron, pigments such as ß-carotene, xanthophylls, and chlorophyll, and other bioactive compounds. Studies have indicated that BGA have antiviral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties as well as lipid-lowering effects. In particular, inhibitory effects of BGA on hyperlipidemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress can contribute to care of the development of cardiovasculatory disorder and  fatty liver. The blue green algae spirulina is a good source of protein.
Blue green algae may boost your immune system and have natural anti-viral properties. Consuming blue green algae may also help relieve and improve your tolerance of exercise. Blue green algae may also lower blood cholesterol levels and  blood pressure, according to a study published in "Nutritional Research and Practice".
Weight Loss
Algae benefits begins with weight loss, as it’s been shown to aid weight loss efforts, particularly the brown type that may promote fat burning.
Meanwhile, they had positive reductions in many health markers, including liver fat, blood pressure, triglycerides and C-reactive protein.
Heart Health
A scientific review published in 2013 confirms that blue-green algae can help cardiovascular problems and fatty liver, which are two of the most significant threats to health in developed countries. Specifically, the carotenoids, gamma linolenic acid, phycocyanin, fibers and plant sterols can be helpful in preventing heart problems as well as nonalcoholic fatty liver. BGA is may also decrease the development of atherosclerotic lesions or plaques, another way it may likely be cardio-protective.
Inflammation and Pain Reducer
Algae benefits also extend to inflammation and pain relief. In general, algae contains anti-inflammatory compounds like omega-3 fatty acids and chlorophyll.
The results of the in vitro study published in Pharmaceutical Biology confirmed that crude extracts from the Mediterranean red alga Laurencia obtusa exhibited significant anti-inflammatory and pain-killing activity. In addition, it was found to have a gastro-protective effect.
Cholesterol-Lowering
Algae are a rich source of phytosterols, which have the ability reduce blood cholesterol levels, specifically by effectively decreasing LDL (“bad”) cholesterol when given in supplements form. Phytosterols help lower intestinal cholesterol absorption. Spirulina is rich in fatty acids like GLA, amino acids as well as antioxidants and may help to reduce the increased levels of blood lipids (fats).
Heavy Metal Detox
Chlorella is a type of algae that acts as a natural chelator to remove heavy metals from the body.
One of chlorella’s most significant health benefits is that it can wrap itself around stubborn toxins residing in our bodies, such as lead, cadmium, mercury and uranium, and keep them from being reabsorbed. Regular consumption of chlorella has been shown to keep heavy metals from accumulating in our bodies’ soft tissues and organs in the first place.
Stem Cell Proliferation Promoter
In adults, stem cells are found throughout the body. They divide to replenish dying cells and also repair damaged cells. As we age, stem cells age too and have a decreased regenerative capacity, which contributes to the aging process. Based on prior studies showing that blue-green algae may help to promote human stem cell proliferation.
Algae Potential Side Effects and  Interactions
Algae products are typically safe for most people as long as they’re free of contaminants like harmful bacteria and toxic metals.  Make sure that you only use products that have undergone thorough testing.  Since some supplements can slow blood clotting, taking them along with herbs that also slow clotting might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding. Dosages vary by product and person. An appropriate dose also depends upon the user’s age and health concerns.
Make sure to read labels carefully and consult a professional if you feel unsure about an ideal daily dosage.
