This Spanish medal show St James with a pilgrim’s staff. The Spanish inscription reads “Santiago De Compostela” which means “James of Compostela.”

 

St James was the brother of St John and one of the first followers of Jesus.  He and John were fishermen who left their nets and their father on the shore of the Sea of Galilee when Jesus called them to follow him.  He became one of the twelve apostles.   Many traditions grew up around his relics, the most famous being the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain which is presumed to be the saint's burial place.
